Iacchus (Bacchus), also known as Dionysus, was the Greek god of wine, the grape harvest, winemaking, fruit, vegetation and fertility. But his 'fruity' character had a dark side: he was also the god of insanity and religious and ritual ecstasy. His final domain was as the god of the theatre. Over the centuries, many artists have explored the shades of his character. He has been depicted as androgynous, menacing, prancing, feminine, masculine, jovial and brutal. His various shades are met in Euripides' play 'The Bacchae.'
